2025年12月9日(火) - 12月21日(日)の期間、トーテムポールフォトギャラリーにて開催される展覧会「三里塚 - 大きな物語の歴史III / 小さな物語へ」に先駆け、前回の展示のアーカイブを公開します。

写真展「大きな物語の歴史II / 大地と闘争」は、2021年から制作している、三里塚闘争、成田国際空港を題材にした作品の第四弾として、2024年12月10日(火) - 12月15日(日)の会期で開催されました。

In advance of the exhibition “Sanrizuka – History of Grand narrative III / To small narratives,” which will be held at the Totem Pole Photo Gallery from Tuesday, December 9th to Sunday, December 21st, 2025, we will be opening an archive of the previous exhibition.

The photo exhibition “History of Grand narrative II” was held from Tuesday, December 10th to Sunday, December 15th, 2024, as the fourth installment of works based on the Sanrizuka Struggle and Narita International Airport, which have been in production since 2021.

ステートメント

この作品は、1966年から千葉県の三里塚で繰り広げられた、新東京国際空港（現・成田国際空港）建設反対運動の歴史を示したものである。「三里塚闘争」と言い表されたその運動は、当時の学生運動や新左翼の活動家が関与、加担した事で過激化し、死者を出す惨事と化した。70年代以降、横行する過激な運動により大衆の支持を失う一方、更に運動が先鋭化し、テロ・ゲリラが多発した。90年代には、政府と空港反対派との対話により、反対派住民の大半が旗を降ろしたが、今でも一部住人や支援者が闘争を継続している。

1979年、哲学者ジャン=フランソワ・リオタールは、マルクス主義などの既存の知的体系を「大きな物語」として批判し、ポストモダン時代の到来を先見した。だが、未だ「大きな物語」は再生産され、現在でも生き残っている。むしろその影響力が徐徐に増しているのではないだろうか。そのメタ物語の是非はさておき、現代に生きる私達はその「物語=歴史」を批評的に分析する必要性があるのではないか。

変容した風景と、闘争時代の風景の間には歴史的「距離」がある。その距離とカメラ/写真というレイヤーを媒介して見ることで、一種の批評性が獲得できるのではないかと考えた。それは「物語=歴史」を風景を通じて見る事により、次世代に繋ぐという意味での「問い」を投げかけるという事である。

Statement

This work depicts the history of opposition to the construction of New Tokyo International Airport (now Narita International Airport), a movement active in Sanrizuka, Chiba Prefecture since 1966. Dubbed the "Sanrizuka Struggle," the movement became radicalized through the involvement and support of student movements and New Left activists of the time, eventually progressing to a tragedy that even led to deaths. While the public embraced antipathy toward the rampant radical movement since the 1970s, the movement only became keener, resulting in many incidents of terrorism and guerrilla activity. In the 1990s, dialogue between the government and the faction opposed to the airport led to most residents lowering their flags of opposition. Even today, though, a number of residents and supporters carry on the struggle.

In 1979, the philosopher Jean-François Lyotard criticized Marxism and other existing intellectual systems as a "grand narrative," foreseeing the advent of the postmodern era. Strangely, however, the grand narrative has been reproduced and survives today. Its influence even seems to be increasing. Setting aside the pros and cons of that meta narrative, we denizens of the modern age must perhaps critically analyze this narrative.

A historical distance lies between transformed landscapes and the landscape of the era of struggle. By looking through that distance and through the layer of camera/photography as the media, I expected that I could capture a sort of criticality. This is a matter of posing questions in the sense of connecting to the next generation by looking at narrative through the landscape.
